줄거리 Synopsis

귀국을 준비하는 이주노동자 ‘셀림’. 잠시 지낼 곳이 필요한 그는 친구 라흐만을 만나려 가구공단을 찾는다. 셀림은 가족들의 요청으로 본국으로 돌아가지 못하고 가구 공장에서 일을 구한다. 셀림의 새 삶이 시작된다!

Selim is a migrant worker in Korea, preparing to return home. He needed a place to stay for a while, and he visits a furniture industrial complex to meet his friend Rahman. Selim could not go back to his home country due to his family's request; he gets a job at a furniture factory. Selim's new life begins!

제작의도 Director’s Remarks

2023년 8월 말 기준 한국에는 243만 명의 이주민이 살고 있고 그중 130만 명이 이주노동자, 비자가 없는 미등록 이주민은 43만 명이다.

이주노동자들은 한국 사람이 일하지 않는 3D 업종에서 일을 하며 사회 구성원으로 살아가고 있지만 피부색이 다르고 한국어가 서투르다는 이유로 일만 해야 하는 기계 취급을 당한다. 또한 본국에 있는 가족들에게도 어느 순간 그저 돈 주는 기계로 취급받는다. 결국 어느 사회의 일원에도 섞이지 못하게 된다.

방글라데시에서 태어나, 1998년 한국 마석의 한 가구 공장에서 이주노동자의 삶을 살았던 ‘섹 알 마문’ 감독은 <빨대(Drained by Dreams)>를 통해 ‘한국의 이주노동자는 힘들다’라는 단편적 이야기가 아닌 이주민은 어디에나 있고 우리 곁에 늘 함께하고 있으며, 나고 자란 삶의 터전을 떠나 다른 나라에 가서 살아가는 것은 어디에서든 불안정하고 힘든 여정임을 담고자 했다.

As of late August 2023, 2.43 million migrants were living in South Korea — 1.3 million of them migrant workers, and 430,000 undocumented migrants without visas. Migrant workers live as members of this society, working the “3D” jobs — dirty, dangerous, and demeaning — that Koreans will not take. Yet because their skin is a different color and their Korean is halting, they are treated as machines that exist only to work. And at some point they come to be treated by their own families back home as machines too — machines that send money. In the end they are absorbed into neither society.

Director Shekh Al Mamun — born in Bangladesh, who lived the life of a migrant worker in a furniture factory in Maseok, Korea in 1998 — made Drained by Dreams to tell something other than the flat story that “migrant workers in Korea have it hard.” Migrants are everywhere, always here alongside us; and to leave the ground where you were born and raised to live in another country is an unsettled, difficult journey, no matter where you go.
