줄거리 Synopsis

<망원 FUNK>는 서울 마포구 망원동에서 산지 14년차 미국인 감독이 망원동의 속 마음과 동네 본능적인 주파수를 담겨자 하는 실험적인, 초기 힙합적인, 초단편 다큐이다. 

"Mangwon FUNK" is an experimental, hip hop style, short documentary that aims to capture Seoul, Mangwon-dong's inner heart and foundational rhythms - as seen from a US-born., Mangwon-based director who lived in the neighborhood for 14 years.

제작의도 Director’s Remarks

<망원 FUNK>의 탄생은, 포레스트 감독이 KBS 방송 <이웃집 찰스>에 출연하며 '20만원 안에서 망원동에 대한 작품 연출을 해주세요'라는 숙제가 냐왔다. 그 때, 감독이 옛날  한국LP로만 DJ하고 있어서 'funky'하고 귀한 1970, 80녀 때 한국 음악에 매우 깊게 연구하고 있었다. 그래서, 초기 힙합의 기법으로 한국 노래를 샘플링하고 비트메킹을 했다. 예산이 20만원 밖에 없는 다큐를 하기로 했으니 감독이 살고 망원동을 휴대폰으로 장기적인 촬영 기간을 시작했다. Funk이라는 개념은 어느 사람, 지역 등의 희석되지 않은 본능적인  그루브, 바이브, 주파수, 향기, 등 - 긍정적인 것 넘어.  그래서 <망원 FUNK>라는 작품은 3년 동안 망원동만 있은 나름의 funk를 발견하고 전달하고자 하는 작업이다.              

The genesis of "Mangwon FUNK" lies in a challenge Director Forest received while appearing on the KBS program My Neighbor Charles: to create a work about Mangwon-dong on a budget of just 200,000 won. At the time, the director was DJing exclusively with vintage Korean LPs and was deeply immersed in researching the "funky" and rare Korean music of the 1970s and 80s. Consequently, he sampled Korean songs and crafted beats using early hip-hop techniques. Faced with such a limited budget, he began a long-term filming project using his mobile phone, capturing the Mangwon-dong neighborhood where he lived. The concept of "Funk" here goes beyond merely the positive; it embodies the undiluted, groove, vibe, and frequency — the very essence of a place and its people. Thus, "Mangwon FUNK" is a project dedicated to discovering and sharing the unique "funk" found within Mangwon-dong over the course of three years.
