<이주민독립예술제> 자유를 향한 선언!

<Migrant Indie Art Festival> — A Declaration of Freedom!

올해로 15회를 맞이하는 이 축제는 커다란 변화를 맞이했습니다. 오랫동안 불려 온 '서울이주민예술제'라는 이름을 내려놓고, '이주민독립예술제'라는 새로운 이름으로 다시 태어났습니다.

여기에는 두 가지 간절한 염원이 담겨 있습니다.

첫째, '서울'이라는 지역적 한계를 뛰어넘어 전국, 나아가 국경을 넘어 더 넓은 세상으로 확장된 예술제를 만들고 싶은 마음입니다.

둘째, 새로이 새겨 넣은 '독립'이라는 단어에는 이주민 창작자와 예술가들의 온전한 '자유'를 향한 외침이 담겨 있습니다.

많은 이주민 예술가들이 한국 땅에서 체류 비자나 소속된 직장의 제약 때문에 자신이 원하는 예술 활동을 자유롭게 펼치지 못하고 숨죽여야 했습니다. 우리는 이들을 가로막는 모든 현실적인 제약과 장벽을 벗어나, 오직 예술가로서 자유롭게 창작하고 소통할 수 있는 해방구를 만들고자 합니다.

특히 '이주민독립예술제'는 단순히 일 년에 한 번 열리는 축제에 그치지 않습니다. 이 축제는 흩어져 있던 이주민 예술가들이 한 곳에 모여 서로의 존재를 확인하고, 함께 창작을 논하며, 다음 단계로 도약할 수 있도록 돕는 이주민 예술 활동의 주요 거점이자 거대한 '플랫폼' 역할을 하고 있습니다.

2026년 가을, 올해 예술제의 슬로건은 "스위치 온!"입니다. 이는 그동안 제도적 제약과 차별의 그늘 속에 가려져 있던 이주민 창작자들의 무대를 우리가 함께 환하게 밝히자는 약속이자, 이주민 예술 플랫폼의 전원을 힘차게 켜서 더 많은 창작자들을 세상과 연결하겠다는 다짐입니다.

Now in its 15th year, this festival has undergone a major transformation. We have set aside the name "Seoul Migrant Art Festival," which we carried for so long, and have been reborn under a new name: the Migrant Indie Art Festival.

Two heartfelt aspirations are woven into this change.

The first is our desire to break free from the geographic limits implied by "Seoul" and expand the festival into a wider world — reaching across the country and beyond its borders.

The second lies in the word we have newly inscribed — 독립, independence, the 'Indie' of our new English name. It carries within it the cry of migrant creators and artists for true freedom.

Many migrant artists living in Korea have had to silence themselves, unable to freely pursue the artistic work they long for — constrained by the terms of their residency visas or their employers. We want to create a space of liberation where they can create and connect freely, simply as artists, free from every practical barrier and wall that stands in their way.

And the Migrant Indie Art Festival is not simply a festival that happens once a year. It serves as a major hub and a grand platform for migrant artistic activity — a place where scattered migrant artists can gather in one space, recognize one another, discuss their creative work together, and find support for their next leap forward.

This autumn of 2026, our festival's slogan is "Switch On!" It is both a promise — that together we will brightly illuminate the stage of migrant creators who have long been obscured in the shadow of institutional constraints and discrimination — and a commitment to powerfully switching on the migrant arts platform and connecting more and more creators with the world.
